Approach to Therapy
If you are in recovery we will review or formulate your relapse prevention plan in a non judgmental, non authoritarian manner.
We will identify your high risk thoughts, feelings and behaviours and situations which are “safe” vs. slippery.
We will examine your past successes and failures as well as your fears around change.
I will help you identify your support system and may suggest referrals to appropriate community resources.
Adult Child of Alcoholic
If you are an Adult Child of an Alcoholic, we will be addressing and normalizing the DON’T TALK, DON’T FEEL, DON’T TRUST rules of your childhood to launch you on your way to healing.
We will explore how the alcoholic parent or caregiver’s behaviour has affected you.
I can help you understand the coping mechanisms you developed to manage your situation as you grew up.
We will explore and resolve historic issues that may continue to resurface in your life, allowing you to put the past to rest and look forward to living more fully in the present.
If you are presently in a relationship with (or are a parent of) an alcoholic/addict, counselling will help you identify your needs and limits in a supportive, non judgmental way.
You will not automatically be encouraged to leave the relationship or distance yourself (unless your personal safety is an issue).
Instead we will explore strategies such as boundary setting and “loving detachment,” and why it is important to “not keep the secret .”
